                      COLOUR & LANDSCAPE :
Cezanne said 'Colour is light' so it obviously helps to have bright, clear days if you want to see colour in the landscape... annoyingly, we tended to have overcast and even wet days when we were out on location and bright sunny days when booked in to the studio ( although to be fair, the worst rains came over lunchtime). However, in spite (or because) of this, students managed to develop a particular sensitivity with colour which led to some excellent, vibrant and creative landscape paintings.

WEEK 2  CHILDREN'S WEEK:   The week began with a beautiful day at Port Seton harbour and beach – a bit too sunny for some fair complexions, so there were red faces the following day in the studio where lino prints, paintings and sculptures from 'found' objects were produced. At the other end of the weather spectrum, Thursday morning was spent watching the Forth Bridges appear and disappear in the mist, obliging the children to develop a newartistic vision – impressionism – a rare treat for any mini-Monets...

                      WEEK 3 – WORKING MODEL :
An exciting week, full of dramatic incidents, usually occurring at about 3.30 pm. On Monday our model (as fisherman ) stood all day in bright sunshine upon the quayside at Newhaven, when, all at once with the in-coming tide, a fishing boat sped into the harbour aiming straight for our man and unloaded its catch. The (real) fisherman, before taking his leave of us looked up at the sky, shook his head and said,'Its gonna rain...!' and within 3 minutes the heavens had opened. On Tuesday our model (as farmer) mingled with the animals in the byre at Garvald Home Farm, when, at about 3.30, the bull (behind her) roared and bellowed as a line of cattle outside his shed took their turn at being tagged. On Thursday at about 3.30 our model (as miner) was hanging off a steam locomotive outside Newtongrange Mining Museum...
