                      LAND &      SEA

Beginning with an introduction to colour theory, this course will guide students from 'objective' colour studies – mixing the colours we see – towards a more personal and creative use of colour. Studies will be produced in mixed media (pastels & collage), as well as in acrylic and oil paints, on location in the Scottish Borders and the coast of East Lothian. There will be lessons on the colour wheel, the use of complimentaries and exercises in transforming palettes and colour schemes. We will draw inspiration from the simplified realism of Edward Hopper's land and seascapes and the more complex and instinctive visions of Bonnard. Other presentations will look at the expressive use of colour in the more recent landscapes of David Hockney.

                      CHILDREN'S WEEK

                      ANIMALS  & ART

We will begin the week with several trips to draw animals on a farm, at a bird sanctuary and at the Museum.
You will learn different ways of drawing with pencil, charcoal, ink and pastels. In the studio we will have stuffed animal displays for further inspiration and will develop drawings and ideas into paintings, prints and also build 3-dimensional sculptures from card and papier-mache. We will explore the wonderful patterns and textures of the animal world.
We will also look at the paintings of Henri Rousseau and Franz Marc for inspiration.

OLYMPICS 2012 Working with sportsmen and women on location (at a stadium, waterway and gymnasium) and in the studio, students will build up a collection of drawings and sketches of runners, canoeists and gymnasts. These studies will be developed into multifigure paintings and mixed media pieces, where athletes and their settings combine to create dynamic compositions that capture the drama of the Olympic spectacle. Students will be guided in the use of charcoal, ink, pencil and pastels. Toulouse Lautrec's preferred medium of peinture a l'essence will also be used for rapid oil sketches. Inspiration will come from the dynamic drawings of Raphael, the vigourous paint handling of Titian and Rubens and the depictions of sport by'modern painters such as Thomas Eatkins and Bill Jacklin.
